There are a lot of terms we use in Topo Maps+, and not every mapping app says things the same way. Here the main keywords we use and what they mean:
Base map: Refers to the original map, when overlays have been added.
Exporting: Directly sending a KML or a GPX file via email, airdrop, etc. This is a data file and not something for sharing the map image itself. Can be opened in most mapping apps.
Map: The base layer of data in the app. It is simply a graphical representation of the Earth’s surface, with nothing over top of it.
Map view: A map view is what it’s called after other layers are added on top of it. (e.g. Natural Atlas + Hill Shading, Trails, and Slope Angles)
Overlay: Layers of data stacked on top of a map (e.g. Waypoints, Trails, secondary maps, etc.)
Region: A contained area on the map created by the user.
Route: A saved path made by the user. Routes can include existing trails as well as self-drawn.
Sharing: Uploading the data to Topo Maps+ servers and allowing a link to be shared to that specific data. This can be either data files or image files such as geospatial pdfs.
Team: A group of users uploading/viewing data (Routes, Tracks, Waypoints, etc.) in a shared file.
Topo Maps+ Pro: This is the paid version of Topo Maps+. It is $49.99 per year and gives access to high resolution maps, downloading for offline use, premium maps, and more!
Track: A recorded hike. This is done with the “Start Recording A Track” button in the hike menu. Topo Maps+ will record where you go based on your location data.
Trail: An established path. However, not every trail is selectable. A trail may appear on a map visually but is not selectable for more details. Selectable trails in Topo Maps+ come with the overlays Open Street Maps Trails and U.S. Forest Service Trails.
Waypoint: An icon created by the user marking an exact location on a map view.
